Hi everyone!

We are continuing the tests of the excellent Seasonic power supplies with today a top-of-the-range model, the X650 (model KM3)! A model of 650 Watts 100% modular with an 80Plus Gold certification, enough to have power and a very good performance. The Seasonic X series also has a hybrid ventilation system which allows fanless operation up to a certain power / internal temperature, the fan then starting. Let’s see all this in more detail!

Seasonic_X650_boite_facade

As usual at Seasonic, sobriety and class are the order of the day, on the top of the box we find a honeycomb printed in relief, a photo of the power supply as well as the 80Plus Gold certification, the power and the model. . No excessive marketing here, thank you!

Seasonic_X650_box_arriere

At the rear we find the main characteristics of the power supply, the 80Plus Gold certification, the hybrid mode, the Sanyo Denki fan (ball bearing), Japanese 105 ° capacitors, 7 year warranty, etc.

On the edge a listing of the main characteristics also, in 7 languages this time!

On the sides we find the technical characteristics, the dimensions, the different connectors as well as the power distribution table and we learn that the single 12V rail can alone provide 648 Watts, point of scheming to reach 650 Watts!

Seasonic_X650_boite_ouverte1

When opening the box we find the manual placed on the foam protecting the power supply, the bags containing the modular cables are on the left. All this is very typical at Seasonic, nothing out of the ordinary!

Seasonic_X650_boite_ouverte2

By removing the top of the foam we fall on the beast in its velvet-style case with the most beautiful effect, as usual for the brand’s top-of-the-range models!

Seasonic_X650_bundle

Here is the contents of the box:

  • 1 power supply X650 (and yes!)
  • 1 manuel
  • 1 power cord
  • 5 plastic cable ties
  • 3 Seasonic cable ties
  • 4 vis
  • 1 bag containing the modular cables

As usual the bundle is complete, a sufficient number of cable ties and everything needed to connect the power supply. Let’s move on to the power supply itself now!

Seasonic_X650_featured

Here is the beast! All dressed in black and gold inscriptions, the build quality is excellent as usual, the black paint is the most beautiful effect and the unit exudes quality from the first grip.

You can see the fan behind the honeycomb grille, a San Ace 120mm 9S1212F404. Nothing out of the ordinary here 🙂

On one side is the power distribution table according to the rails, 125 Watts for 3.3V and 5V combined, 648 Watts for the single 12V rail, 6 Watts for -12V and 15 Watts for + 5Vsb.
Depending on the brands and models, it often happens to see power supplies sold for, for example, a total power of 500 Watts and to have less than 400 Watts (see less) on the 12V, the PC configurations nowadays mainly “pull” on the 12V so there must be all the power on it, this is not a scam but a manipulation of the figures which most of the time mislead future buyers. Here of course no worries, the power supply is sold for 650 Watts and has 648 Watts on the 12V 🙂
The opposite side is all black with only a small X-Series in gold writing in one corner, we should not forget which model it is!

Seasonic_X650_cote3Seasonic_X650_cote4

The Seasonic X650 is therefore 100% modular, there are 2 connectors for the 24-pin, 5 for the peripherals and 6 for the CPU / PCIe (one is behind the sticker). A sticker is present showing the button that is used to adjust the behavior of the ventilation of the X650, on “Normal” the fan will run all the time while the “Hybrid” mode will allow semi-fanless operation.
At the back there is a honeycomb grid, a small 0/1 button and a small Seasonic plate showing that the power supply is compatible from 100 to 240VAC.

Seasonic_X650_interior

A little inside view, the X650 is based on the Seasonic P660, which promises a very good stability, a very good recovery as well as a very good noise level!
Before we get to the features let’s take a quick look at modular cables:

The number of connectors available should be sufficient for 99% of the configurations, it will be possible to make an SLI / Crossfire thanks to the 4 PCIe connectors, 2 processors, a large number of Sata or IDE devices, a priori there will be no need additional splitters or adapters.
All cables are flat, apart from the sheathed 24-pin, the build quality is once again excellent and they exude quality. The length of the cables is very good, no problem with the 8-pin processor in a large tower for example!

As I said above, 80Plus Gold so a very good performance in perspective, 648 Watts on the single 12V rail, all protections are required, the dimensions are in the standard and the modularity is total. The price of 145 € places this X650 at the top of the basket for a power supply of this power but the 7-year warranty (!) Will allow the buyer to be quiet for a very long time, not to mention that if Seasonic decides to offering such a long guarantee is certainly not for nothing!

The test platform

The Seasonic X650 power supply has been tested on the configuration below:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7 875K @ 3,2 Ghz
  • Motherboard: Asus P7P55D
  • Memory: Kingston HyperX 4 x 2 Go 1600Mhz
  • Hard disk: WD Raptor 150 Go
  • Graphic card: Sapphire Toxic 5850

The test protocol

The core i7 875K has been slightly overclocked to 3.2Ghz. The readings in charge were taken during an OCCT Power Supply test, the readings at rest were taken after 15mins on the desk.

The power supply has been tested against:

  • be quiet! E9 580CM (tested here)
  • be quiet! L8 Pure Power 500 (tested here)
  • be quiet! Straight Power 10 500 CM (tested here)
  • Corsair CS450M (tested here)
  • Seasonic S12 600 (de 2006)
  • Seasonic G550 (tested here)
  • Seasonic X650 (v1 de 2010)
  • Seasonic P660 (tested here)
  • Seasonic Platinum 460FL (tested here)
  • Silverstone NightJar 520 (tested here)
  • Silverstone SFX SX600-G (tested here)
  • XFX TS-550 Bronze (tested here)

The consumption

Before starting, let’s take a look at the performance of the power supplies compared to the Seasonic X650, indeed the different 80Plus certifications will directly influence consumption, so this will be a good way to have concrete results. Only the S12 600 does not have an 80Plus certification because it did not yet exist at the time of purchase (but the following versions of this power supply had the classic 80Plus certification, so 80% / 80% / 80% to 20% respectively / 50% / 100% load).

Seasonic_X650_consumption

Suffice to say that the Seasonic X650 is very strong in terms of consumption by approaching dangerously Platinum power, normal you will tell me with an 80Plus Platinum power base! At rest and with 77 Watts it is placed very well, in load there is only one step to place it at the level of its big sister P660, nothing to say in terms of performance!
Note that consumption has been recorded to take for the complete configuration.

The tensions

Seasonic_X650_tensions

The Seasonic X650 is impressively stable, the transition from rest to load does not seem to bother it in the least, 3.3V remains at 3.36V, 5V at 5.04V and 12V at 11, 96V. There is absolutely nothing to complain about except maybe I wish I had something to complain about!

Noise pollution

Attention : Part to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately not having access to the appropriate equipment and using an android application to take the readings the measurements below are only indicative! The readings were taken 15cm from the feed.

Seasonic_X650_nuisances_sonores

Here again it is faultless in terms of noise pollution, the fan did not start once during the tests in hybrid mode so the X650 is at the level of a fanless power supply, that is to say 0!

Seasonic_X650_featured

Here we are at the end of this test, what to say about the Seasonic X650?
As you could see during the test there is not much to reproach this Seasonic, the build quality is excellent, the voltages are simply impeccable, the performance is almost at the level of an 80Plus Platinum certification and noise pollution is simply absent (with the 300 Watts of the test configuration). On top of that, the 7-year warranty and the excellent Seasonic after-sales service are a big plus.
But then, she has nothing to be ashamed of? The only thing that could tarnish the picture a bit is the price of around € 145 which places it more expensive than many 80Plus Gold power supplies and which is also very close to its big sister the P660, but in the end it is the price to pay for having something that will last over time! It will be perfect for a high-end gamer config.

The +

  • Semi-Fanless
  • Stability
  • Build quality
  • 7 year warranty
  • SAV Seasonic

A big thank you to Damien from Green Spirit who allowed me to do this test.
