Test – Silverstone SFX SX600-G : Specs | CPU | Hashrate | Review | Config

Hi all!

After the ATX standard format power supplies, Silverstone decided to seriously attack the SFX power supply market, after a few models up to 450 Watts the manufacturer decided to think big by releasing a 600 Watts 80Plus Gold model! The feeds from Silverstone have always been of a very high quality, will this small feed continue in the line? This is what we will see!

The Silverstone SX600-G box is black with yellow all over it to show that the power supply has an 80Plus Gold certification, which is also roughly at the top right. A photo of the power supply is present as well as a quick listing of its strengths, SFX format, 100% modular, 80Plus Gold certification, 600 Watts on a single 12V rail etc … without forgetting the fact that it is semi fanless .

At the back we find the same listing as the front but with some small graphics and other photos illustrating everything. We learn that the cables are all flat and that the fanless operation of the power supply should be limited to 15% of the total power or 45 ° in which case the fan will start to rotate at 739 RPM minimum.

On the edge we find the weight, the dimensions as well as the MTBF (100,000 hours at 25 °, which is not about to arrive in a small mini ITX box, it will always be much hotter) and a power distribution table. The single 12V rail can deliver 600 Watts, which is really great, Silverstone didn’t try to scratch on the other rails to advertise a power supply exceeding 600 Watts.

When opening we fall directly on the manuals, below we can see the small SX600-G in bubble wrap, the modular cables in a plastic bag and the power cord. No foam here inside the box but everything does not move too much inside and everything arrived in good condition.

As we can see the bundle is very satisfactory, especially at the level of the SFX -> ATX plate which will prove to be very practical if ever you want to install the power supply in a normal size box even if the interest of such a power supply will be nullified in this case.

Here is the beast! All dressed in black, the SFX format being so small that the power supply fits in the hand, 600 Watts in the hand is not nothing! It’s time to take the owner’s tour.

Everything is very sober here, we can see the 8 cm slim fan with the serial number and the various internal test pads. Underneath the Silverstone logo is engraved so you don’t forget!

On the side is the eternal label with the power distribution table, as well as a warning against opening the power supply for any unauthorized person and of course all the certification logos.

The rear ventilation grille is of course made in the shape of a honeycomb, like 99% of the power supply on the market. As for the connectors, we can clearly see that the power supply is 100% modular, 1 24-pin connector, 1 8-pin processor connector, 2 connectors for IDE and Sata peripherals as well as the blue 8-pin / 6-pin PCIe connector.
The general quality of the power supply is really excellent, the solidity in the air, nothing to say at this level, as usual on Silverstone products. Now let’s move on to modular cables!

Modular cables

The cables are really well designed for use in a very small box, out of the question here to install the SX-600 G in an ATX box under penalty of not being able to connect anything, and this is not its first use!
The number of connectors is quite sufficient, 2 PCIe, 2 Molex as well as 4 Sata and of course the obligatory 24-pin and 8-pin CPU, it will be possible to connect a large configuration on the small one!

The Silverstone SX-600 G is therefore a power supply with an 80Plus Gold certification capable of achieving an efficiency of 92% maximum at 50% load, which should greatly limit the heat to be released via the small 8 cm ball bearing fan. (and therefore more enduring than a “Sleeve bearing” fan). Since the power supply is semi-passive at rest, it should not make the slightest noise to reach 40 dB at full load, which is normal in an SFX format equipped with a small fan. Of course, electrical protection is required here!
The SX-600 G can be found around € 130 for the moment, which is rather high for a 600 Watt power supply but miniaturization always has a price, we have nothing for nothing! Let’s see if this price is justifiable after the tests.

The test platform

The Silverstone SX-600 G power supply has been tested on the configuration below:

The test protocol

The core i7 875K has been slightly overclocked to 3.2Ghz. The readings in charge were taken during an OCCT Power Supply test, the readings at rest were taken after 15mins on the desk.

The consumption

Before starting, let’s take a look at the performance of the power supplies compared to the Silverstone SX-600 G, indeed the different 80Plus certifications will directly influence the consumption, so this will be a good way to have concrete results. Only the S12 600 does not have an 80Plus certification because it did not yet exist at the time of purchase (but the following versions of this power supply had the classic 80Plus certification, so 80% / 80% / 80% to 20% respectively / 50% / 100% load).

The small Silverstone SX600 G fulfills its commitments perfectly here with a very low consumption at the level of the other 80Plus Gold power supplies, for such a small power supply the result is really stunning, with 350 Watts in charge it even allows itself to pass in front of 2 other 80Plus power supplies. The tensions

Stability is essential here with the 3.3V going from 3.31V at rest to 3.3V under load, the 5V going from 4.96V to 4.94V and the 12V from 11.96V to 11.94V! There will be no stability problem due to the drop in voltages with the small SX600-G.
The small SFX power supply is flawless for the moment and represents for the moment a must have for any mini-ITX configuration requiring an SFX power supply, let’s see what this gives in terms of noise pollution.

Noise pollution

Attention : Part to be taken with a grain of salt, unfortunately not having access to the appropriate equipment and using an android application to take the readings the measurements below are only indicative! The readings were taken 15cm from the feed.

At rest, the Silverstone SX600-G is completely silent, in fact the fanless mode keeps the fan off during low load. In load, the power goes up to 34dB which is once again excellent for such a small power supply, the 8cm fan does not attack the ears and does not suffer from parasitic noise, indeed only a slight noise of breath is heard and will certainly be covered by noise from other tower components.

Here we are at the end of this test, what about the Silverstone SX600-G?
To begin with, the manufacturing quality is clearly there, the power supply is completely modular, the semi-fanless allows a fan to be switched off at rest and the 80Plus Gold certification allows for the most measured consumption; all these advantages are very rare on an SFX power supply and work in favor of the small SX600-G! The only small hitch in there remains the price which, at 130 € is higher than its big sisters in ATX format, but unfortunately there is no miracle, which says miniaturization says price increase!
