The symbolic valve of the gas pipeline was opened by the President of Poland and the prime ministers of Poland and Denmark.

The total capacity of Baltic Pipe is 10 billion cubic meters per year. Duda, speaking at the opening ceremony, said that gas through the new gas pipeline could be supplied not only from Norway to Poland, but also to other countries. “From here, this gas can go everywhere, wherever it is needed,” the Polish president said. And Morawiecki added that the Baltic Pipe was built in opposition to the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.

The Polish government has stated that the republic plans to replace Russian gas with gas supplies via the Baltic Pipe. On April 27, Gazprom suspended gas exports to Poland due to non-payment for deliveries under the new scheme in rubles. Poland previously received up to 10 billion gas from Russia per year through the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline.

Earlier Tuesday, Polish oil and gas concern PGNiG announced that it has a diversified portfolio of gas sources for Baltic Pipe, which includes both the purchase and its own production of PGNiG Upstream Norway, which will ensure the supply of about 6.5 billion cubic meters of gas to Poland from Norway in 2023. and about 7.7 billion in 2024.

PGNiG also said that over the past four months it has signed contracts for a total volume of about 4 billion cubic meters of gas per year. Among them are contracts with the Equinor Group for the amount of 2.4 billion cubic meters of gas per year and a number of smaller contracts, including with TotalEnergies. These contracts have different durations and will start, depending on the contract, in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
