The price of graphics memory from Samsung and SK Hynix is ​​soaring

Digitimes now reports that the price of graphics memory from Samsung and SK Hynix has also increased unusually much in the past month, where the price has risen by about 30 percent. The reason is stated to be that the two manufacturers are stepping down the production of graphics memory in order to instead invest more in memory for smart phones and servers.

Sources from the upstream supply chain expect the pricing to go even higher in September and the shortages will pose a great challenge to graphics card and gaming notebook players over their abilities to handle component inventory.

They also state that prices will rise even more during the month of September and the low supply will continue to persist, which is expected to cause major problems for manufacturers of graphics cards and laptops.

Samsung is today the largest manufacturer of graphics memory with a market share of about 55 percent, closely followed by SK Hynix with 35 percent. Servers and smartphones have become an increasingly important area for both manufacturers and the former today accounts for almost 30 percent of Samsung’s memory manufacturing.
