The situation in the world forced Lithuania to react. The Lithuanian army will accelerate modernization

According to the latest information from the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, the current world situation, which Russia wants to worsen at all costs, has forced the state to react appropriately. To this end, the Lithuanian army will accelerate its modernization, so that in the event of a war it will be able to fight for itself more effectively.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense and the Lithuanian Armed Forces have decided to accelerate the implementation of the most important projects and programs aimed at modernizing the army. These will primarily include the purchase of weapons, military combat equipment, as well as that for observation, intelligence and transport.

The measures taken are necessary to adequately respond to the development of the geopolitical security situation in the region. The categories of the most important projects have been defined, and their quick implementation will allow to significantly strengthen the military strength of the army, and perhaps also to activate the national defense industry.

This is not the first time that Lithuania has responded to Russia’s actions. In 2014, after Russia’s annexation of Crimea, it increased defense spending to 2% of national GDP, which started its gradual increase to 2.5% in 2030. Currently, the budget covers 2.05% and, according to the state, these increases in recent years have already allowed for “breakthroughs in the modernization of the military”.
