Tips to start playing on Linux
Getting started on Linux is difficult if you are new to the platform. To make it easier for new users, we will go over several tips to get started playing on Linux.
If you are going to play video games on Linux, you will need to configure Steam. Steam works on a wide variety of Linux operating systems. To set it up, follow the instructions below.
If you are new to Linux and want to play games, you will likely want to install Steam through a GUI. There are a few ways to do it. To get started, determine if you are using Gnome Shell or KDE Plasma. If you are using Gnome Shell, you will have the Gnome Software application store (AKA Software). Those on KDE Plasma will have the KDE Discover application.
After determining what desktop environment you are in, follow the instructions to configure Steam through the GUI.
Note: if you use Ubuntu, the Gnome software will be «Ubuntu Software».
Open “Software” through the Gnome Shell application menu. Press the Windows key on the keyboard and type “Software.” Once the application is open, find the search button and click on it with your mouse.
Search for “Steam” in the search results. Then select “Steam” from the results to access the application’s Gnome software page. Then click the “Install” button to configure Steam.
Open “Discover” through the KDE Plasma application launcher. Once the application is open, find the search box and type “Steam.” Then press Get into to view the search results. Then, look at the search results and click on “Steam.”
After clicking Steam, KDE Discover will load your application page. Then click the “Install” button to install Steam on your Linux computer.
If configuring Steam through the GUI doesn’t work, or if you prefer to use the terminal, this is how you can configure Steam.
In Ubuntu, start a terminal and install the application with fit.
sudo apt install steam
On Debian Linux, download the latest Steam DEB package with wget and install it with dpkg.
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb sudo dpkg -i steam.deb sudo apt-get install -f
Install Steam on Arch Linux and make sure the “multilib” software repository is enabled. Then run the pacman -S command to install Steam.
sudo pacman -S steam
To install Steam on Fedora, use the instalar dnf command below.
sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
sudo dnf install steam
Go to the OpenSUSE software page for Steam, select your distribution. Then click the “1 click Install” button to configure the application.
To set up Steam through Flatpak, follow our guide to setting up the Flatpak runtime on Linux. Then enter the two commands below to configure Steam.
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
While playing on Steam is great on Linux, not all games are on Steam. If you want to play games with EA Origin, BLizzard BattleNet, Epic Games launcher, Ubisoft Connect, or GOG Galaxy, you will have to install it through Wine with the Lutris app.

The Lutris application is available from most Linux distribution software repositories. Open a terminal and follow the installation instructions below to get it working on your Linux PC.
Ubuntu
For Lutris to work on Ubuntu, you will need to be version 21.04 or later.
sudo apt install lutris
Debian
For Lutris to work on Debian, you must use Debian 11.
sudo apt-get install lutris
Arch Linux
sudo pacman -S lutris
Fedora
sudo dnf install lutris
OpenSUSE
sudo zypper install lutris
After installing Lutris, follow the instructions below to set up EA Origin,
Do the following if you want EA Origin to work with Lutris for use on Linux. First, head over to the EA Origin Page on Lutris.net. Once there, locate the “Install” button to install the launcher.
When you click “Install”, Lutris will display a GUI and help you set up EA Origin.
Want to play Blizzard BattleNet games on Linux? You will first need to install it with Lutris. Head over to the Blizzard BattleNet Page on Lutris.net and find the “Install” button to get it working.
Select the “Install” button to configure the BattleNet Launcher on your Linux PC through Lutris.
The Epic Games Launcher works on Linux with the help of Lutris. To set it up, head over to the Epic Games Home Page at Lutris.net. Once there, locate the “Install” button and click on it with the mouse.
Selecting the “Install” button on the Epic Games page will launch Lutris and begin the installation.
To play games on GOG Galaxy on Linux, you will have to install it on Lutris. To get it working, head over to the GOG Galaxy Page on Lutris.net. Then look for the “Install” button.
Click the “Install” button to start installing GOG Galaxy via Lutris on Linux.
