ToIP: IBM and R3 join the new Linux Foundation project

A myriad of large organizations have partnered with the Linux Foundation to improve security and privacy protocols for consumers and businesses.

According to a press release, the new consortium of the Linux foundation, Trust over IP (ToIP), bring together nonprofit organizations, governments and large private sector companies.

Among the members are: Accenture, IBM Security, MasterCard, Sicpa, R3, The Human Colossus Foundation, the University of Arkansas and the Canadian province of British Columbia.

The ToIP Foundation wants to provide the layer of digital trust that was lacking in the original design of the Internet […] The combination of open source standards and protocols, pan-industry collaboration and our neutral governance structure will support this new category of digital identity and verifiable data exchange, ”said Jim Zemlin, director of Linux Foundation.

The group explains that companies today find it difficult to protect and manage digital data following the arrival of new technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI).

As a result, consumer mistrust in the use of their personal data would slow innovation and the adoption of new services on the web.

Without a global standard on how to build digital trust, these trends are bound to continue, "insists the consortium.

The ToIP Foundation This will use digital identity models that leverage interoperable credentials and the new W3C Verifiable Credentials standard to address these challenges.

The Trust over IP Foundation (ToIP) establishes the technical and governance standards to provide this missing layer, which will allow reliable and secure value transfers between peers. As an academic partner, the Blockchain Center of Excellence of the University of Arkansas is pleased to join this effort to develop open standards for a layer of trust on the Internet, "said Mary Lacity, director of the Blockchain Center of Excellence at the University of Arkansas.

This fall, Alvarium, the Linux foundation, IOTA, Dell and other notable players announced to collaborate in order to develop the concept of Data Confidence Fabric (DCF).
