TSMC to focus on automotive products – graphics card production under threat

The situation in the graphics chip market is critical. Available models cost several times more than what was asked for them back in the summer, and most of the cards simply disappeared from sale. Against this background, forecasts about the growth of prices for video cards due to the sharp demand for video memory GDDR6 are not encouraging. What to expect in the future? Nothing good.

TSMC has monopolized the semiconductor market. Somewhere nearby, Samsung is trying to keep up, but the South Korean giant is only increasing its capacity, while the Taiwanese manufacturer is ready for the mass production of chips based on the 5nm process technology. In fact, AMD and NVIDIA are completely satisfied with the current 7 and 8 nm technical processes, but they are also in short supply, and everything will only get worse. As it turns out, car production is in jeopardy. And these are not video cards that you can do without. The situation is so dangerous that German Economy Minister Peter Altmeier appealed Minister of Economy of Taiwan, asking to speak with the leadership of TSMCThe request concerns the reallocation of power towards semiconductor chips for cars. Moreover, quite recently, similar requests came from the United States, Japan and other European countries. The main problem lies in the fact that modern cars are becoming more high-tech, which means they need chips that control intelligent vehicle systems.

A video card for $ 1000 is profitable, but when it comes to a product whose cost starts at $ 30,000, all efforts will be thrown on the latter, which means that the wait for the stabilization of the situation in the market for graphics chips may be delayed. It is extremely doubtful that TSMC will be able to resist such unobtrusive requests, because big politics comes into play.
