UN secretary general advocates blockchain use

For the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the blockchain could help assure donors that their donations are used correctly. In addition, it could reduce the waste observed in processes, logistics and cooperation between agencies.

Antonio Guterres had already mentioned the blockchain in 2018 by describing it as a technology that “stimulates progress [des Nations Unies] towards the Sustainable Development Goals ”.

In a press release, the secretary general ofUN reiterated its position, calling on the organization to adopt this new technology.

“So that United Nations are doing their best in the digital age, we need to adopt technologies, such as blockchain, which can help accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, ”he said.

Some agencies ofUN are already involved in projects using the blockchain. This is particularly the case with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) who launched a pilot project of ” tokenized chocolate bars Aimed at making the cocoa trade fairer.

Also, since 2018, the UNICEF accepts donations in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC) and other digital tokens.
