Users believe that high power consuming PC components are a problem

In forums and social networks, this topic is always talked about, the increase in consumption in CPUs and GPUs, generates debates that last hours, days and months and even creates obsessive fans of some manufacturers. Now a survey reveals that 85.5% of users believe that energy consumption is something manufacturers need to work on more.

According to those consulted, the greatest concern is related to the impacts that higher energy consumption can have on the electricity bill, with 33.5% of people pointing it out as the main problem. For 28.5%, the temperature generated by the hardware is the biggest concern, since it requires new cooling solutions that are not always feasible.

The third place is occupied by noise with 12.2 percent, since a higher cooling requirement has an impact on the noise of the system in addition to higher consumption, in many cases if it is a Water Cooler, we have to connect the pump and multiple fans. Concern for the environment is in last place in the ranking of priorities, with 11.3%.

14.5% do not care about the increase in consumption

The survey also revealed that a minority, but considerable, part of users do not have major concerns about the increase in energy consumption. For 14.5% of voters, this is not a relevant factor when building a new PC with next generation components.

The increase in the consumption of the components has been evidenced mainly in recent years. For example, we can say that in 2015 a GeForce GTX 980 Ti consumed 211 W or a Radeon R9 390X consumed almost 270W, in 2017 the GTX 1080 Ti arrived with a consumption of 231 W and the Radeon RX 590 reaching a consumption of 225W, and the RTX 3090Ti in 2022 consumes 445W.

Reports that the next generation of NVIDIA graphics cards may have models with power consumption of up to 500 to 600W seem to contradict the basics of the tech world. Although in theory the use of components with less lithography should lead to greater energy efficiency (and a decrease in consumption), in practice it seems that we are going in the opposite direction.
