Video card prices, from January to today the situation has worsened: frightening price lists

Nvidia is preparing to introduce video cards GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti, ma the shortage problem is far from solved and the prices prove it. The analysis of the German site 3DCenter, carried out on several online shops spread between Germany and Austria (Caseking, Geizhals, ProShop, etc.) dramatic situation for gamers looking for a new video card, with lists at least three times higher to those communicated by Nvidia at the debut (MSRP) of the various models.

The analysis – which also retraces the Italian situation, exceptions or special cases apart – over the last five months shows how the prices of the Radeon RX 6000 cards are two to three times higher on average than the MSRP, while the GeForce GPUs based on Ampere architecture are three times or more expensive on average than the price lists.

From January to today we see how the RTX 3080 has gone from 1399-1499 ?? to 2999 ??, with an introductory price of only 719 ??, practically remained a mirage. We are faced with a more than four-fold price increase on the MSRP. It goes slightly better than the other models in the RTX 3000 range, although with these prices no video card is even remotely recommendable, even though they are excellent products as seen in our reviews.

Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done, if not wait for better times: Nvidia and AMD say that there will be an improvement in production in the coming months, but neither of them is unbalanced in quantifying it and for this reason we do not place much hope in a drastic change in the situation.

Leading chip makers such as TSMC and Intel say the scenario will only improve in the course of 2022, as investments in manufacturing expansion take months to become concrete. It could be the beginning of next year or the second half, today it’s hard to know or predict.

Nvidia is trying to mitigate the phenomenon of GPU purchases by cryptocurrency miners thanks to new versions of the video cards presented, equipped with different revisions of the GPUs in order to implement a hash rate limiter that makes it inconvenient to use them for mining. It is a development that we will see in the coming weeks and whose actual impact on the market will need to be evaluated, even if the feeling is that it will not be decisive at all.
