“We have not been able to meet the demand for graphics processors”

In March 2017, the mining of cryptocurrencies, also called mining, popular again as the Ethereum currency gained momentum. This has led to a shortage of graphics cards on store shelves around the world, especially Radeon models but also some Geforce variants.

There were gamers whose needs and demands weren’t filled last quarter, and the second quarter is an important part of the year for us.

In an interview with Digitaltrends, Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang says that the company has not been able to meet the high demand, which has left many players in the market without graphics cards. Huang also mentions that it does not get better from the fact that the second quarter is considered extra important for the company.

It’s very clear new currencies will come to market. And it’s very clear the GPU is ideal for cryptography […] this is a market that’s not likely to go away anytime soon.

Furthermore, Huang clarifies that he does not see cryptocurrencies as a fly, but that the mining of new variants will continue in the future and that it is then optimal to use a graphics processor for the purpose. However, no concrete plans on how to meet this are communicated.

Last but not least, Nvidia’s CEO comments on whether Volta-based graphics cards focused on gaming are in sight. The answer is easily avoidable, where Huang neither wants to confirm nor deny what the future looks like.

The Volta architecture was introduced in the form of the Tesla V100 calculation card earlier this year. The latest graphics card aimed at consumers is lavish Titan XP, although most probably prefer some variant of the Geforce GTX 1080 Ti.
