What are the VPNs with IPv6 support

The IP addressing system is the basis of the Internet, each element of the network must have a unique address to function properly. It means that two or more entities sharing the same address cannot exist on the network, otherwise it would be very difficult to exchange data packets.

The transition from IPv4 to version 6 of the protocol is now underway. We have dedicated an in-depth study to the subject because the transition to the new connection protocol can jeopardize your anonymity.

Indeed, if a VPN doesn’t support it properly, it could just happen that the customer’s IPv4 is hiddenand that instead IPv6 remains fully exposed.

This is the case illustrated in the screenshot of IPs that we have included (see also How to know IPv6), having noticed the problem we have retested some of the VPN preferite from our readers to make sure they are also secure with the IPv6 protocol.

How does the IPv6 standard work?

The new standard uses 128-bit addresses, and is therefore capable of offering as many as 10 to 27 billion unique addresses, a number hard to imagine. The change to IPv6 is in fact mainly dictated by a numerical problem, the 4.2 billion addresses that the old protocol offered are inadequategiven the ever-increasing number of connected devices.

An IPv6 address typically has this form:

2001:0b07:0ae6:3131:882e:0f62:3b6c:11ed

As you can see it is made up of 8 numbers in hexadecimal format separated by colons.

little by little all sites and devices connected to the network will have to switch to the new standardto date, few websites and local providers have made the transition, but they are rapidly multiplying.

For this reason now when choosing a VPN it’s up to check that it supports the new protocol. As it could happen to be as explained above with the IP address in version 6 exposed.

What does IPv6 address exposure involve?

First, of course the exposure of the IP address true of the user whether it be in version 4 or 6 is equivalent to reveal your identity online. So to drastically compromise the privacy that a VPN customer expects.

We reiterate that each IP address is unique, so from this (if the provider allows it) it is possible to trace the individual user and the domestic subscription signed with the internet provider.

A VPN that exposes users’ true IP addresses is useless, not least because it reveals the user’s true country of connectionpreventing him from effectively overcoming territorial blockades.

What are the safest IPv6 VPNs?

Fortunately, our tests showed that a good number of VPNs have effectively implemented the new IPv6 standard, here are the best.

1. CyberGhost

This is another very high level service, which offers remarkable performance coupled with one great attention to detail.

This attention has led the team to insert a special one function dedicated to users with IPv6through this any connection via this protocol that is not routed through the VPN is blocked.

To enable the function in the client, tap click on the gear icon to reach the menu “Settings“, Click on the item”CyberGhost VPN“And then on”Disable IPv6 connections when they are NOT connected to the VPN“. To find out more, you can check out our popular and in-depth CyberGhost VPN review.

2. NordVPN

We’ve already reviewed NordVPN on our pages and it’s really great and their team always pays a lot of attention to cutting edge news (as is the case with the WireGuard protocol implementation).

By doing several tests we noticed how they are not never leaked the original IP address. So the service always managed to keep our anonymity perfectly.

For the latest offerings of this VPN and all its features, you can check out our popular NordVPN review.

3. Atlas VPN

This is a VPN service very performing it’s interesting; we have already dedicated an in-depth review to it.

The Atlas VPN team has always shown too particular attention to safety and great customer support. Precisely this attention makes Atlas the first VPN that appears to have completed the transition to IPv6. By connecting, in fact, it is noted that not only the connections via IPv6 are routed over IPv4, (as the competitors do) but that it is also provided a new IPv6 address.

Atlas VPN is also a free VPN. To find out more, you can go to our in-depth study on Atlas VPN.

4. Private Internet Access (PIA VPN)

Again it comes to a top-notch VPN service with excellent performances and a good team behind. This team has also implemented a blocking of connections via IPv6 address and their routing through the tunnel. So it manages to guarantee the same security as the other services listed. If you want to know more about this VPN, we invite you to check out our in-depth Private Internet Access review.
