Although there is much talk about the Google Assistant on Android (previously Google Now), there are some elementary questions that will surely arise for a certain user who begins to use this operating system: Is it an application? where this? Is it installed on my cell phone? Is it up and working? Where are the settings? We are going to review the responses to each of these concerns.

Google Assistant or Google Assistant is a functionality that allows the user to execute tasks through voice commands. For example, you can send a message or make a call to a contact without even touching your cell phone.

The Google Assistant is an application?

No, the Google Assistant is NOT an application as it is normally understood. If you search for it in the Android application manager, it will not be found as such. It also doesn’t appear in the app organizer. This is because the Google Assistant is a part of the Google application, which you will find in your application menu.

How to know if it is “installed”?

You just have to look for the «Google» application on your cell phone or tablet. If the application is installed and you have a device with Android 5.0 or higher, then you will have the Google assistant.

What if I don’t have the Google assistant?

The Google app that contains the assistant is usually pre-installed on most Android devices. If this is not the case, you will have to install it on your own along with other Google applications that Google Assistant and other apps such as the Play Store depend on to function. Remember that you need at least an Android 5.0 system. In devices with Android 4.1 or higher you can have the old version of Google Assistant, that is «Google Now«, From the Google application or« Google Search ».

Where is it or how to open Google Assistant?

Just open the Google app on your Android device and tap on the microphone to the right of the search bar. A window will appear listening for a voice command. That is Google Assistant.

How is it used or how does it work?

Once you touch the microphone within the Google application you can tell it with your voice to do a task. For example, to call a contact you can say “Call John.” To send a WhatsApp you can say «Send WhatsApp to Carlos».

There are many voice commands available that are quite intuitive. For example you can say “reminder”, “text note”, “open facebook”, “object definition”, “play mana” (or any band or song) etc. If the command is incomplete, the Google assistant will ask you what it needs to complete the task.

Where are the settings?

To enter the Google Assistant settings, open the Google application and tap on the “More” tab at the bottom. Choose “Settings” and then “Google Assistant.”

There you will have the possibility to control your activity and privacy in the assistant, your nickname, your places, food preferences, weather, reservations, purchases, languages, conversation, voice recognition, means of transport, routines, notifications, notes, lists, reminders, music, etc.
