AMD 64-core “Rome”? It’s quite possible!

This time the source of the rumor comes straight from China. Several local residents claim that the next generation of EPYC processors, known under the code name “Rome“, Will bring ideas”WIN THE CORES !! #! # @!”To a higher level. How? The way is simple… just add more cores.

Wccftech’s informants claim that the most powerful variant of AMD’s upcoming server processors will have as many as 64 physical cores with SMT support, which will give buyers a total of 128 threads. Before you think that such a number of cores has nothing to do with gaming performance, we must not forget about servers and workstations, where CPU multitasking is crucial. Imagine how many virtual machines you could bet on this!

But let’s slow down for a moment and move on to the reports themselves. According to them, the systems “Rome“EPYC will have cores made in 7nm technology, which will come in two variants:

  • First variant (stronger) – will feature Zeppelin chips with two CCX blocks offering a total of 16 Zen 2 cores. Combining four of them in an MCM chip (about which more here) will result in a round sum of 64 physical cores.
  • Option two – this one will also be based on Zeppelins with two CCX blocks that will offer 12 Zen 2 cores. Their fusion via Infinity Fabric connections will only offer 48 cores and 96 threads.

However, reports of a weaker version hit the network some time ago and we know it under the code name Starship, so this is news about a 64-core processor “Rome” is said leak. Well, here we come to the problem, because it is merely an unsubstantiated rumor, and while these are quite likely in some cases, it does not always have to be the case. Due to this, we are again forced to wait for AMD’s official position.
