AMD can allow partner-made Radeon RX 6900 XT

Prior to AMD’s presentation of the graphics cards in the Radeon RX 6000 series, rumors circulated that the top card RX 6900 XT, the largest of the large “Big Navi” cards, would be sold exclusively by AMD themselves. During the unveiling, AMD did not disclose any details on the issue, but only mentioned the price and launch date. New reports indicate that AMD is in talks with partner manufacturers to let them build their own variants on the top card.

The report comes from Hardwareluxx.de, whose sources claim that calls are being made, but nothing has yet been decided on whether AMD will choose to allow partner-specific designs. One possible scenario is that AMD lets its partners sell Radeon RX 6900 XT cards, but that these are AMD designers in terms of both circuit boards (PCBs) and cooling solutions. Another potential solution is that partner manufacturers are allowed to equip AMD’s circuits with their own cooler solutions.

The latter would then be in line with the first wave of partner-made graphics cards on the Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT. These use AMD’s circuit design but apply their own solutions for coolers and other design. In the future, manufacturers are also expected to develop their own designs for the circuit board around AMD’s graphics circuit.

Whether AMD allows its partners to build their own variants of the Radeon RX 6900 XT thus remains to be seen. The cards, which go on sale on December 8, 2020, are therefore entirely AMD’s design, and are sold at a target price of USD 999 or approximately SEK 11,100 including VAT.

Are you hoping to buy the Radeon RX 6900 XT from AMD or a partner manufacturer, or are you aiming for the cards in the RX 6800 lineup instead?
