AMD denies low availability data on Radeon VII

In early February, AMD will launch its 7-nanometer Radeon VII and Vega graphics card, which would not be released to consumers from the beginning. However, it was not long after the announcement was followed by a report from Tweaktown, which wrote that the graphics card would be sold in less than 5,000 copies and minus margins.

While we don’t report on production numbers externally, we will have products available via AIB partners and AMD.com at launch of Feb. 7, and we expect Radeon VII supply to meet demand from gamers.

In a statement to SweClockers, AMD responds to the information that Radeon VII would be a graphics card in a very limited edition. The company does not go into any figures, but claims that there will be enough of the new graphics card to meet demand.

At the same time, AMD says that Radeon VII will be sold both through its own website and partner manufacturers. As recently as during the Consumer Electronics Show, however, it emerged that the company’s partners do not release any tailor-made models, ie with in-house developed circuit boards and cooling solutions.

The announcement probably means that AMD’s partner manufacturers will sell the Radeon VII in the reference version, where only the carton differs and possibly that details on the graphics card are adorned with manufacturer-specific stickers. In addition, it is possible that they can increase the clock frequencies a bit.

Goes up against Geforce RTX 2080

AMD Radeon VII is built around the Vega 20 circuit, which is the world’s first graphics circuit to be manufactured at 7 nanometers. Of the 4,096 stream processors, 3,840 are activated and will run at a clock frequency of up to 1,800 MHz, compared to 4,096 stream processors up to 1,546 MHz for the Radeon RX Vega 64.

The big news for the Vega 20 is a massive 4,096-bit memory bus paired with the Radeon VII with no less than 16 GB of HBM2, which ticks at an efficient clock frequency of 2,000 MHz. This gives a record high bandwidth of 1 TB / s – well over all previous graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia.

On the cooling front, a solid piece is noticeable that takes up two expansion locations and is cooled by three axial fans, which have semi-passive operation and are thus switched off at low loads. By all accounts, the cooling solution is much needed as the Radeon VII is expected to draw around 300 W.

According to AMD, the Radeon VII will compete with Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 2080. The model will therefore also receive the same recommended price of USD 699, corresponding to just under SEK 7,900 including VAT. The launch will take place on 7 February.
