AMD introduces the next generation graphics processor to just the silicon

It is Matt Skynner, department manager at AMD’s graphics division, who poses in front of the camera with no less than a 28 nanometer graphics processor in his hand. At the Fusion 2011 conference, most of it is about upcoming processors with integrated graphics, but in this case it is a separate graphics processor for laptops that gets a moment in the spotlight.

On-site in Taiwan, the new mobile graphics circuit is being demonstrated in the role-playing game Dragon Age 2, according to AMD by demonstrating a “fluid and high-resolution gaming experience”. However, no more detailed details than that emerged at the presentation.

AMD is expected to launch the first graphics processors codenamed Southern Islands later this year. However, it looks like it will be another number of months before the new architecture also begins to be used in performance-oriented models for desktops.
