AMD launches Apple-exclusive graphics card for Mac Pro

Apple’s desktop Mac Pro, whose design was similar to a grater from IKEA, was launched in 2019. It is the company’s absolute top model and it can be configured in several different ways. On the processor side, the choice goes up to the Intel Xeon W-3275 with 28 cores, base frequency of 2.5 GHz and maximum frequency of 4.4 GHz.

At launch, the entry-level model on the graphics card side was the AMD Radeon Pro 580X and the top model Radeon Pro Vega II Duo, an Apple-exclusive variant with dual graphics circuits and 32 GB HBM2 memory. Now Apple is choosing to expand the hardware selection for Mac Pro, but it is not in the form of self-designed M1. Instead, it will be the graphics card choices that are transformed and the previous variants will be joined by a new set of Apple-exclusive AMD creations with RDNA2 architecture.

The three new options consist of Radeon PRO W6800X, Radeon PRO W6800X Duo and Radeon PRO W6900X. All belong to AMD’s set of graphics cards aimed at professional contexts and workstations. They are mainly optimized for heavier calculations for, for example, professional video and image processing or rendering. The latter two are new additions and seemingly exclusive to Apple, where the Radeon PRO W6800X Duo like the previous top model Radeon Pro Vega II Duo consists of several graphics circuits, in this case two.

Anyone who wants to acquire a Mac Pro with a new graphics card must prepare to open their wallet. The entry-level model has a price tag of SEK 72,088 and the addition of graphics cards starts at SEK 35,000.
