AMD may be in full swing with the preparations for the launch of its new graphics architecture RDNA 2 and “Big Navi” in the autumn, but has somewhat unexpectedly found time to launch a new mobile graphics circuit that today makes its debut in Apple’s 16-inch Macbook Pro. The graphics processor in question is called Radeon Pro 5600M, is based on the RDNA architecture and has the code name Navi 12.
Like the enthusiast model Radeon RX 5700 XT, the Radeon Pro 5600M is manufactured by TSMC at 7 nanometers and equipped with the same number of computing units, a total of 40, for the same amount of stream processors, 2,560. The newcomer is also equipped with 8 GB of HBM2 memory, which in addition to higher performance facilitates packaging in a portable format, and has a specified power consumption of 50 watts.
The Radeon Pro 5000M family
Radeon Pro 5600M | Radeon Pro 5500M | Radeon Pro 5300M | |
---|---|---|---|
GPU | Navi 12, RDNA | Navi 14, RDNA | Navi 14, RDNA |
Compute Units | 40 | 24 | 20 |
Streamprocessorer | 2 560 | 1 536 | 1 280 |
Max. frequency | 1 035 MHz | 1 300 MHz | 1 250 MHz |
Calculation capacity FP32 | 5,3 TFLOPS | 4,0 TFLOPS | 3,2 TFLOPS |
Memory | 8 GB HBM2 | 8 GB GDDR6 | 4 GB GDDR6 |
Memory speed | 1,54 Gbps | 12 Gbps | 12 Gbps |
Memory bus | 2 048 bit | 256 bit | 256 bit |
Bandwidth | 394 GB/s | 192 GB/s | 192 GB/s |
TDP | 50 W | 50 W | 50 W |
The use of HBM2 memory at 1.54 Gb / s over a bus with a width of 2,048 bits provides a total memory bandwidth of 394 GB / s – compared to AMD’s enthusiast card RX 5700 XT and its GDDR6 memory which powers 448 GB / s. Compared to other cards in the Radeon Pro 5000M series, however, the 5600M cleans the house, to the same power budget of 50 watts.
Said power budget is achieved with the help of reduced frequencies – the Radeon Pro 5600M is with its turbo frequency of only 1,035 MHz the lowest clocked family member in the Radeon Pro 5000M series. Despite this, the Radeon Pro 5600M delivers a full 32.5 percent higher floating point performance than its little brother 5500M.
The mobile graphics circuit Radeon Pro 5600M was launched according to a press release signed AMD exclusively to Apple, so availability in products other than Macbook Pro at the time of writing is unclear. When asked if the circuit could be launched in other products, AMD answers to Tom’s Hardware that the company does not discuss product strategies regarding the future.
