AMD launches Radeon RX 470

For this generation of the graphics card, AMD and Nvidia have very different strategies, where Nvidia has set its sights on upper price ranges, while AMD initially seeks to regain lost market share through a focus on lower segments. One part of this is that the Radeon RX 480 is now joined by the RX 470.

* Applies to variants of Radeon RX 480 with 8 GB GDDR5. Models with only 4 GB have a memory frequency of 7,000 MHz and a bandwidth of 224 GB / s.

The new graphics card is based on the same graphics circuit as the Radeon RX 480, but in a scaled-down design. Instead of 2,304 stream processors and 144 texture units, these are 2,048 and 128, respectively, with dynamic clock frequencies where the range is 926–1,206 MHz.

Unlike previous data, the graphics card will not only be sold with 4 GB GDDR5, but partner manufacturers can also equip the model with 8 GB. AMD’s standard frequency for memory is 6,600 MHz, which over its 256-bit memory bus provides a bandwidth of 211.2 GB / s. The power consumption is specified at 120 W, which is the same as for Nvidia’s new Geforce GTX 1060.

According to AMD, the newcomer is primarily intended for gaming in 1,920 x 1,080 pixels with high settings, where the graphics card should be able to run modern and popular game titles at over 60 frames per second (fps).

The recommended price for the Radeon RX 470 is $ 179 – $ 20 lower than for the Radeon RX 480 with 4GB of GDDR5. In conversations with Swedish retailers, it appears that the cheapest models will be released for SEK 2,199, while more lavish variants go all the way up to SEK 2,699.
