In fact, the Radeon 300 series is not the only news at AMD’s PC Gaming Show during the E3 gaming show. The company is also lightening the lid for the new graphics processor Fiji, which will be part of the exclusive graphics family Fury and used for no less than four models.
The new Fiji graphics processor is described as the world’s fastest, with no less than 8.9 billion transistors – up from 8 billion for the Nvidia GM200 used by the Geforce GTX Titan X and GTX 980 Ti. This includes 4,096 stream processors, a 4,096-bit memory bus and a theoretical computing power of 8.6 TFLOPS.
In addition to a record number of transistors and high specifications for the graphics processor, Fiji is first out with the stacked memory type HBM, where the memory circuits are placed close to the graphics processor for higher bandwidth and lower power consumption. Here, AMD is talking about half a terabyte per second in bandwidth or 512 GB / s. However, this comes with a significant disadvantage – that the memory capacity is currently limited to 4 GB.
In addition to high performance, AMD has invested in small form factors with Fiji. In addition to the top model Radeon R9 Fury X with water cooling, there is the Radeon R9 Nano, an air-cooled variant with a length of a paltry six inches (15.24 cm). Despite this, higher performance than the Radeon R9 290X is offered with twice as high energy efficiency.
When it comes to the Radeon R9 Fury X, AMD talks about plenty of performance to not only run games in 4K UHD, but also 5K resolution. For those who want the latest technology at a lower price and without water cooling, the company will also release the Radeon R9 Fury without X in air-cooled design.
The last and fourth model is a graphics card with dual graphics processors Fiji, which was shown on stage in a compact living room computer with the code name Quantum. In this concept computer, all heat-generating components are located at the bottom and all cooling is managed in the upper part – probably thanks to closed water cooling.
Pricing
Despite AMD talking to partners about a price of 999 dollars for the Radeon R9 Fury X, it lands at a significantly lower 649 dollars, corresponding to about 6,700 kronor including VAT. The less expensive variant Radeon R9 Fury gets the recommended price of 549 dollars, corresponding to 5,600 kronor including VAT.
Launch and availability
The first graphics card with Fiji is the Radeon R9 Fury X which launches on June 24, which is followed by the air-cooled R9 Fury on July 14. These will be followed up later this summer by the compressed Radeon R9 Nano. The as yet unnamed model with dual graphics processors arrives in the autumn.
