AMD publishes images on the Polaris 11 and Polaris 10 graphics circuits

It is now not far to the next generation of graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia is here. Ahead of the launch of Polaris, AMD is setting up a landing page for the architecture, where they will roughly go through the news, but also publish pictures of what are believed to be the upcoming graphics circuits Polaris 11 “Baffin” and Polaris 10 “Ellesmere”.

The images are either distorted or cut out, but the site Videocardz has fixed them through some work. The first one comes from the main image and does not resemble any graphics circuit from previous generations, which is why it is believed to represent at least the Polaris 11, which is primarily intended for laptops.

The second image shows what is believed to be a cut-out of the larger graphics circuit Polaris 10. The author of the article then took the image and applied it to AMD’s graphics circuit Tonga, which gave a circuit size of 234 mm2 – close to the 232 mm2 which have been relevant in a previous leak about Project F on Linkedin.

Assuming the size is correct, this means that the Polaris 10 will be significantly smaller than Nvidia’s equivalent GP104, which measures in at somewhere over 300 mm2. This may be because AMD manufactures Polaris at 14 nanometers at Globalfoundries and Samsung instead of 16 nanometers at TSMC, which is the case for Nvidia, which could mean that AMD has a cost advantage over its competitor.

Earlier speculation is that the Polaris 11 will have 1,280 stream processors and a 128-bit memory bus paired with GDDR5 graphics memory. The Polaris 10, in turn, is expected to double the capacity of both parts and be equipped with GDDR5X, something that can provide performance on a par with today’s flagship Radeon R9 Fury X.
