AMD Radeon R9 390X “Fiji” in special edition is gifted with water cooling

After months of rumors, the puzzle pieces for the Radeon R9 390X are starting to fall into place. The graphics processor that forms the basis of the graphics card is called Fiji and is by far the company’s most advanced ever, with over four thousand stream processors and the new type of memory High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM).

Videocardz is now publishing documents that are said to be from an internal presentation, which AMD will present to partner manufacturers. With the name 2015 Future of Radeon strengthens the information that the Radeon R9 390X will have 4,096 stream processors, which are based on an updated generation of Graphics Core Next architecture.

The architecture is said to have full support for not yet completed DirectX 12, a promise Nvidia also has with the Geforce GTX 900 series “Maxwell”. In addition, there are improvements with the Zerocore power sophistication and a new version of UVD with support for acceleration of H.265 / HEVC as well as more than four times faster decoding of H.264 material.

From the end of 2013 onwards, AMD has the battle for the big drum for gaming in 4K, and with Fiji, AMD is taking it further to virtual reality, which the graphics processor is said to have been specially designed for. Related to this is that the amount of video memory is set to 8 GB HBM with “ultra high bandwidth”.

Since last autumn, rumors have been circulating that the graphics card will be water-cooled. This is reinforced by the presentation which claims that this will be the case, however, as a special edition. The fact that the cooling is described in such a way suggests that a variant with traditional air cooling should be released, which in such cases would have a lower price. The fact that the Radeon R9 390X liquid cooler is probably a direct consequence of the fact that it is said to consume 300 W.

The AMD Radeon R9 390X and the Fiji graphics processor are expected to make their debut early this summer.
