AMD Radeon R9 395X2 with dual Fiji circuits sees the light of day this summer

It is not far to the Radeon 300 series, or at least its unveiling. While most graphics cards are expected to be renamed models, there is at least one exception in the performance segment, where the Fiji graphics processor together with stacked HBM memory from SK Hynix is the top model Radeon R9 390X.

Now, however, new information suggests that the Radeon R9 390X will not be the flagship of AMD’s new lineup. Tweaktown writes that the graphics card will be accompanied by a model with dual graphics processors Fiji – Radeon R9 395X2 – during this year’s Computex trade fair, which kicks off in early June. The report also claims that the model gets 8 GB of video memory, ie 4 GB per Fiji graphics circuit.

Elsewhere, Fudzilla reports on the model and describes it by the telling code name Fiji VR. That a graphics card with dual graphics processors so clearly alludes to virtual reality can be seen as natural with AMD’s previous statement in the area where the company sees potential in two graphics cards, or two graphics processors on the same circuit board, each rendering one image per eye.

What distinguishes the reports is mainly the launch of the Radeon R9 395X2, where Fudzilla in turn claims that the graphics card will arrive at a later time. This is also more consistent with previous rumors, which said that such a graphics card would arrive during the fourth quarter of the year.

Interestingly, both publications write that the Radeon R9 390X does not have what it takes to raw on Nvidia’s latest top model Geforce GTX Titan X, which will be followed by the GTX 980 Ti with even higher performance. This would explain why AMD would like to see a Radeon R9 395X2 on the market as soon as possible.

Once the Radeon R9 395X2 arrives, however, it can be expected to be a graphics card of rank with up to 8,192 stream processors, compared to 4,096 and 2,816 for a single Radeon R9 390X and today’s Radeon R9 290X, respectively. At the same time, it is no big deal that it will be a power-hungry story, perhaps more than the Radeon R9 295X2 with a specified power consumption of as much as 500 watts.

While the unveiling of the Radeon 300 series is expected to take place during Computex 2015, store availability will be delayed until later in the third quarter of the year.
