AMD Radeon R9 Fury initially only from Asus and Sapphire

On Friday, AMD unveiled the Radeon R9 Fury, where the big news is partners, unlike the R9 Fury X, gets free hands to develop tailor-made solutions. Asus and Sapphire have taken advantage of this with their respective models, both of which were praised in SweClocker’s test lab.

AMD only displays the Sapphire Radeon R9 Fury Tri-X and Asus Radeon R9 Fury Strix DirectCU III in their presentation.

Unusual with today’s launch is that only two of AMD’s many partner manufacturers are on the train: AMD-exclusive Sapphire and component giant Asus. While it is common for selected and particularly important partners to receive higher allocations of graphics circuits, it is unusual for certain partners to be completely excluded.

Why Asus and Sapphire stand alone with Radeon R9 Fury graphics cards, neither party wants to go into, but refers to AMD whose representatives are equally tight-lipped. What is clear, however, is that they will not remain exclusive, as other partners are also working on their own designs of the graphics card. When these will be launched, however, is still something of a mystery.

Ahead of the launch of the R9 Fury X, another partner told SweClockers that AMD had problems with its yields, that is, the number of usable circuits out of production, on the Fiji graphics processor. The fact that there is a shortage of the Fiji graphics circuit is a possible explanation for the duo’s initially being exclusive launch partners.

The sales start for the Radeon R9 Fury will take place on Tuesday 14 July with price tags of around SEK 6,290-6,490 including VAT depending on the model.
