AMD Radeon RX 590 gets specifications – launched on November 15

After Nvidia consolidated its dominance at the top in the autumn, AMD intends to strengthen its position in the middle class. This is done by taking the 2.5-year-old architecture Polaris down to 12 nanometers, which enables higher clock frequencies and thereby better performance.

Videocardz is now publishing the specifications for the upcoming graphics card, which goes by the name Radeon RX 590. The heart of the model is the Polaris 30 graphics circuit with the same hard specifications as the Polaris 10/20. In terms of the number of calculation units and memory bus, there are thus no surprises.

On the other hand, it is clear that manufacturing at 12 nanometers results in higher clock frequencies. The base frequency in AMD’s standard version is 1,469 MHz, a real step up from 1,257 MHz for the RX 580. The graphics card’s turbo frequency enjoys a similar boost of just over 200 MHz – from 1,340 to 1,545 MHz.

Further to the graphics memory, the specifications are unchanged. It is thus a 256-bit memory bus with 8 GB GDDR5 in an efficient clock frequency of 8,000 MHz, for a theoretical bandwidth of 256 GB / s. That is, exactly the same as for the Radeon RX 480, which was launched in the summer of 2016. No information on power consumption is available.

According to AMD’s internal tests, the Radeon RX 590 will perform in line with what is expected of the increased clock frequencies. This is about 12 percent better performance than an RX 580 in the synthetic tests 3DMark Fire Strike and Timespy, while the increase in real game titles is greater than that.

The report also says that the Radeon RX 590 will receive a launch offer, where AMD throws away a bunch of games. The package is called “Blockbuster Launch Bundle” and contains the trio Devil May Cry 5, The Division 2 and Resident Evil 2, which will be released in early 2019.

The recommended price for the AMD Radeon RX 590 is stated to be 279 USD, which is 50 USD above the RX 580 or the equivalent of around 500–600 kronor higher in Sweden. The prices for the RX 580 today make it difficult to predict what an RX 590 might land on in Swedish stores.
