AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT with water cooling gets 16 GB record fast GDDR6

It has long been rumored that the Radeon RX 6900 XT is not the end stop for AMD on the performance front this generation. Repeatedly, information has emerged that the company is preparing a version with water cooling and especially hand-picked circuits, where the strongest evidence is a Chinese computer manufacturer that will use said graphics cards in systems.

Judging by the specifications, this is a modest lift compared to standard air-cooled Radeon RX 6900 XT. The graphics chip’s specified maximum turbo frequency increases by 7.8 percent from 2,250 to 2,424 MHz, while the game frequency, which is the floor AMD guarantees, is 11.7 percent higher by 2,250 MHz compared to 2,015 MHz for the air-cooled ditto.

The graphics card’s GDDR6 memory also takes a real step up. This is a 12.5% increase from an effective clock frequency of 16,000 to 18,000 MHz for a theoretical bandwidth of 576 GB / s. After a check in the product catalogs of the major memory manufacturers, it appears that SK Hynix is the only one to be able to deliver GDDR6 at such speeds, while competing solutions stay at 16,000 MHz. It is worth noting that this is below the 19,500 MHz Nvidia delivers with its graphics cards, but then the exclusive technology GDDR6X is used.

As a direct part of the increased clock frequencies, the graphics card’s power consumption, Typical Board Power (TBP), also rises from already high 300 to 330 W. Interesting in this context is that it is only an increase of 10 percent, which suggests that it is about significantly harder inside Navi 21 circuits than standard air-cooled Radeon RX 6900 XT.

After this spring’s information that AMD has put the Radeon RX 6900 XT with water cooling on the shelf, it increasingly looks as if the graphics card is about to find its way into stores. When it is launched and at what price, however, two major question marks remain.
