AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 in larger volumes only in October

The launch of the Radeon RX Vega marks AMD’s return to the performance segment for graphics cards, where the top model performs in a class with over a year old Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080. Digitimes now reports that some major volumes of the Radeon RX Vega are not expected until October. The cause is said to be bad yield with too few working circuits in manufacturing, where the integration of HBM2 memory and graphics circuit on the same substrate is pointed out as the single largest culprit.

Digitimes also states that Nvidia is postponing the launch of the company’s architecture Volta on a large scale until the first quarter of 2018. The reason is said to be that the performance that Vega offers is not perceived as threatening the company’s architecture Pascal, while the low supply means that Nvidia still rules in the performance segment.

Finally, the shortage is also expected to affect the deliveries of circuits to third-party manufacturers’ own cooling solutions. Availability is therefore stated to be limited even for these models when they are launched in September.
