AMD to release Windows 11 bug fixes and fTPM via BIOS in May

A few weeks ago we released a note talking about the problems that users had when they activated fTPM and Windows 10 u 11 with AMD Ryzen processors. These problems were defined as stuttering and slow loading, but the promise said that it would be giving a solution soon.

Now AMD says it will have a firmware update in May.

Ryzen PC owners have been complaining about problems ever since TPM became mandatory for Windows 11. Last year, Microsoft announced that TPM 2.0 chips would essentially be required for Windows 11. This is to make the OS much more secure as it is hardware encryption, which authenticates Windows memory.

Now AMD has revealed that these annoyances may be due to issues with the fTPM (firmware Trusted Platform Module), which replaces the physical TPM with the internal processor key, located in the BIOS of Ryzen motherboards. According to the company, some “system configurations may intermittently perform fTPM-related memory operations on SPI flash memory (“SPIROM”), located on the motherboard,” causing the system to flash until completion. this operation.

There is no 100% ready fix for this issue yet, but it is under development with AMD partners and should arrive in the next couple of months. The update must be based on AGESA 1207 or newer.

AMD offers an alternative option to users. Using a dTPM (Device Trusted Platform Module), which is an external module usually designed for individual platforms, installed on the dedicated TMP 2.0 connector on the motherboard. The problem here is that it is not that cheap: these modules are in the range of $50 to $100 dollars. Bitlocker will also need to be disabled before switching between fTPM and dTPM, if enabled.

And of course, there is still the possibility to disable fTPM and accept the risk of using a less secure system or wait for AMD’s solution.
