AMD “Tobago” may be the new graphics processor for the Radeon 300 series in June

When AMD launches the Radeon 300 series, it will apparently be a mix of old and new, but what will actually be new is something of a mystery. There is much to suggest that it only applies to the flagship Radeon R9 390X with the graphics processor Fiji, which would mean that the lower segment only consists of renamed models.

Following the rumors that the Radeon R9 370 may become another graphics card with three-year-old Pitcairn / Curacao, known from the Radeon HD 7800 and R9 270 series, which will be renamed Trinidad. Now VR-Zone, the same source that first wrote that Trinidad became a new graphics processor, is publishing a new article that is said to sort out the ambiguities surrounding the upcoming Radeon 300 series.

As previously known, Fiji is the basis for the Radeon R9 390X and will also be a completely new graphics processor, which in addition to 4,096 stream processors is endowed with 8 GB of the new memory type HBM memory a bandwidth of as much as 640 GB / s. This will be followed by Hawaii, in the current Radeon R9 290 series, which will be renamed Grenada and below will house Antigua, which will be the new name for Tonga from the Radeon R9 285.

Under Tonga are Trinidad and Tobago, where the former is said to be very similar to Pitcairn / Curacao or a renaming without any real news. Instead, it is said that it is more likely that Tobago will be a completely new graphics processor, which given its place in the hierarchy could be a replacement for Bonaire in the Radeon R7 260X.

The launch of the AMD Radeon 300 series is expected to take place in June, in connection with or sometime around Computex 2015 in Taiwan.
