A few hours after the announcement of the new NVIDIA GPUs, AMD try to capture a part of the fans’ attention by moving it to RDNA 3the architecture behind the future Radeon GPUs that will compete with the new GeForce.

In a way, the company led by Lisa Su is focusing on a more sensitive topic in this period, the “expensive bill”, given that the message is all about efficiency, or if you prefer performance per watt. The company led by Lisa Su has published a corporate blog post signed by Sam Naffziger – Senior Vice President, Corporate Fellow and Product Technology Architect – in which the accent is placed on the guidelines that have guided the development of RDNA 3.

In the post, Naffziger traces AMD’s commitment to energy efficiency since it decided to develop an architecture dedicated explicitly to gaming, Radeon RDNA or RDNA for short. In 2019, with architecture RDNA of the Radeon RX 5000, AMD managed to provide a 50% average improvement in performance per watt compared to the previous GCN (Graphics Core Next) architecture.

In 2020, with architectureRDNA 2behind the Radeon RX 6000, even managed to do better with a 65% jump in performance per watt compared to the previous generation. A step forward that AMD was able to take by drawing on the work done by the Zen team on CPUs.

“We have incorporated some of the micro-architectural approaches and design methodologies of Zenn’s CPUs in our graphics pipeline, rationalizing the physical composition of the die to make higher frequencies possible. For example, we relied on dense L3 memory typical of CPUs to implement AMD Infinity Cachea high-density, low-power cache to make the most used data in gaming workloads more accessible, drastically increasing bandwidth and reducing the power required for memory and, in parallel, cutting latency. “

To demonstrate the benefit of getting better and better performance per watt, AMD has released one table which parallels the RX 6000 video cards with NVIDIA’s RTX 3000, comparing performance, TDP and market price. Furthermore, the company recalls that producing less heat and consuming less allows for high performance for longer periods of time, less noise and a less heavy bill.

Leveraging on what has been learned in the two generations of RDNA GPUs, AMD is preparing to introduce the third iteration, namely RDNA 3. By exploiting the production process a 5 nanometers and the chiplet-based designRDNA 3 should guarantee more than 50% better performance per watt than RDNA 2.
