BitMEX Exchange has mass leak of user email addresses

The BitMEX cryptocurrency exchange accidentally revealed the email addresses of an unknown number of users during a mass newsletter.

The exchange confirmed this incident, given that BitMEX employees were also among the recipients of the newsletter.

Cryptocurrency lawyer Jake Chervinsky called this accidental leak of user email addresses a simple mistake that was committed “in the most incompetent way.” According to Cherwinski, this violation of confidentiality can lead to serious consequences. Such data leakage puts BitMEX account owners at great risk, making them potentially vulnerable to hacker attacks. Knowing the email address, which is a kind of “puzzle piece”, it is much easier for cybercriminals to hack into an exchange account.

Many users are concerned that if about 1000 email addresses were indicated in each email, different users might receive different elements of the BitMEX subscription database. Thus, the exchange could disclose the addresses of all traders working on this site.

BitMEX reported that the team immediately began to solve the problem and is trying to assess the scale of what happened.

“We are doing our best to determine the cause of the error, and will contact the affected users. User privacy is our first priority, ”wrote the BitMEX exchange.

After the news of this data leak, the Binance cryptocurrency exchange recommended that its users with an account on BitMEX immediately change their email address to Binance.

Recall that in August, users of the Binance exchange also suffered from data leakage, after which the exchange announced that it would provide them with lifelong VIP accounts. In addition, in July, on the YouHodler cryptocurrency platform, confidential user data was leaked, including cryptocurrency wallet addresses and credit card numbers.
