Doom Eternal with new performance figures and detected problems

At the launch of Doom Eternal, the editors were quick with a performance test where the numbers were not really convincing. Eventually, more performance tests began to appear from elsewhere that showed significantly better numbers. Something must therefore have gone wrong with our own figures.

The problem is spelled Steam Overlay and more specifically the built-in FPS counter that was forgotten is turned off for the editorial staff. Usually this has no or very little effect on performance, but in Doom Eternal it turns out to reduce GPU usage to around 50 percent for Nvidia Geforce graphics cards.

On the red side, usage is much higher than for Nvidia cards but still not quite as much as it should be. With a GPU usage of around 75 percent, AMD does not end up completely unexpectedly better when the numbers are compiled.

Old performance figures

With a quick look at the old performance figures, it appears that the green team is being punished very severely, especially for the Turing series, where the Geforce RTX 2080 Super is overtaken by the GTX 1080 Ti in the highest resolution. The undersigned also reacted to this during the test run, which then had to re-run several times to secure the results.

His prestige and horror

With the graphics cards in full spin, Nvidia once again ends up at the top with the Geforce RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 Super, where the third place is finally taken over by the Radeon VII in the highest resolution. As mentioned in the first test, there are quite large performance differences depending on the area in the game, so have a little margin if needed.

Avoid Steam’s FPS calculator in Doom Eternal

Now, in retrospect, it was of course possible to troubleshoot a little more, but the brain is not always in top shape under time pressure. With that said, we instead learned about the problems with Steam Overlay and the built-in FPS calculator that limits performance. The undersigned usually has it running all the time at home without any major problems, but if you are playing Doom Eternal, look so it is not running and let the graphics card work on it fully.
