Emotet botnet is shut down by international law enforcement agencies

International law enforcement forces jointly managed to stop the work of another large botnet. US, Canadian and European authorities have intercepted Emotet’s infrastructure. It is considered one of the most dangerous botnets in the world. Officials remain silent about their methods of operation, but it is known that the botnet was taken under control from the inside and the devices of the victims were redirected to the infrastructure controlled by the authorities. Europol calls this a unique approach.

Emotet has earned its reputation for complexity and ubiquity. It was first discovered in 2014 and used an automated process to spread malware through an infected Word document attached to emails. The botnet employs hundreds of servers around the world, each serving a variety of roles. Malicious applications often evade detection by antiviruses by changing their code every time they are launched. Until now, the botnet has been very successful in resisting attempts to terminate it

Criminals often used Emotet to hack security systems, then install ransomware, Trojans, and other types of malware.

Naturally, the threat from various botnets does not end there. No one will be surprised if another comes to replace the defeated one. Despite this, the closure of such a large network and advanced methods pose problems for cybercriminals if they do not invent more sophisticated methods of protection.
