Geforce Fermi returns in 28 nanometers

AMD and Nvidia are in full swing to move to new manufacturing technology and with that also comes a new generation of graphics processors, in Nvidia’s case circuits based on the architecture Kepler. Rumors are now circulating that Kepler will be joined by shrunken versions of today’s Fermi, at least when it comes to laptop models.

According to data published on Semiaccurate, Nvidia is preparing a bunch of new 28-nanometer graphics processors with the same or similar specifications as today’s models in the Geforce 400 and 500 series.

These are a total of ten models with 1-2 GB DDR3 or GDDR5 memory on 64-256-bit memory buses and TDP values up to 75 W. The table also shows that Nvidia expects volume production at the end of December for the lowest rated models in the series and that the more lavish variants will be delayed until the beginning of 2012.

The credibility of the data is strengthened by previous statements by Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, who said that the company learned from previous mistakes and now plans to take the safe before the unsafe at the transition to 28 nanometers. That Nvidia lets proven Fermi take the first step into the new generation is in line with that line.
