Geforce GTX 960 postponed to 2015 – lack of graphics processors

So far, the new 900 series is populated only by the performance models Geforce GTX 980 and GTX 970, which means that there are many launches left before the architecture Maxwell can cover all price ranges. This applies not least to the popular upper middle class with graphics cards for around SEK 2,000.

The GM204 graphics processor is currently used in the Geforce GTX 980 and GTX 970, where the latter is reduced from 2,048 to 1,664 computing units. A variant of the same circuit is also believed to form the basis for the upcoming mid-range Geforce GTX 960, which according to previous information would appear on the market towards mid or late October.

That plan now looks set to go awry. According to Japanese Hermitage Akihabara, Nvidia will instead postpone the Geforce GTX 960 and release the graphics card in the first quarter of 2015, probably in January or February.

The reason for the decision is said to be that Nvidia still has difficulty meeting the demand for Geforce GTX 980 and GTX 970, a situation that risks getting worse if another graphics card is launched with the same circuit.
