Radeon price reductions in Sweden may be delayed

The launch of Geforce GTX 970 and GTX 980 puts pressure on AMD. With no new models in sight, the red team is forced to resort to sharp price reductions to once again make the Radeon R9 series a competitive alternative for enthusiasts in upgrade tanks. However, it may be some time before the new pricing takes effect at Swedish retailers.

Target prices: AMD Radeon R9 series

A while ago, it emerged that AMD plans to lose as much as a quarter of the price tags for the flagship Radeon R9 290 and 290X. However, this only applies to new orders. AMD does not issue any so-called price guarantees to compensate distributors and resellers for any inventory losses.

In practice, this means that graphics cards that are now on store shelves are purchased at a higher price than those ordered after a certain date, which forces sellers with a larger stock to only gradually lower prices so as not to cause losses.

At the same time, the cheapest reference models are about to be phased out, which is why the lowest prices will probably not change significantly compared to the current situation. Instead, it seems that the price reductions primarily affect more lavish models with, for example, higher clock frequencies and tailor-made coolers.

In other words, speculators should keep their eyes open as prices can vary greatly depending on the model and point of sale. Some retailers will be able to implement price reductions already now while others will be forced to persevere until the existing inventories start to run out.
