Graphics card sales reach the highest level in five years

During the past year, poor access to graphics circuits has been reported several times, which is due to high consumption of graphics cards. Nvidia themselves have said that they have not been able to meet the demand for graphics processors, partly due to the fact that mining of cryptocurrencies has increased in popularity.

A new report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) shows that sales of graphics cards increased significantly during the third quarter of 2017, with a total of 15 million copies sold. This is the highest level in five years and is said to be partly due to the fact that gaming on the PC platform has grown larger and that mining of cryptocurrencies has become more common.

In terms of manufacturers, Nvidia sold the most and the company’s sales increased by almost 35 percent compared with previous quarters. For competitor AMD, the same figure is about 16 percent. As a result, Nvidia increased its market share by 3.1 percentage points, while AMD decreased by the same share.

It is worth mentioning that this happened despite AMD launching the Radeon RX 56 and Radeon RX Vega 64 during the quarter. However, this is believed to be due to a poor supply of graphics cards at launch and the results of Vega are therefore expected to be clearer in the coming quarters.

Furthermore, it is established that the market for gaming on PCs will continue to grow in the future and all major manufacturers are investing more and more in the area. Examples of this are both Intel’s and AMD’s investments in the enthusiast segment with Threadripper and Intel’s Core i9 series.
