How to Backup iPhone without iTunes – Easy Steps

How to Backup iPhone without iTunes

This article introduces how to backup iPhone without iTunes. The instructions apply to iPhones with iOS 12 or later and Macs with macOS Catalina (10.15) or later.

How to back up iPhone on macOS Catalina

For many years, you had to use iTunes to back up your iPhone. Since iTunes was removed from macOS Catalina (10.15), you can expect Apple Music, the program that replaced it, to be wherever you back up your iPhone. It’s reasonable, but it’s not fair. Instead, in macOS Catalina, you back up your iPhone directly to Finder. This is what you need to do:

  • Connect your iPhone to your Mac using a USB cable and unlock the phone.

You can also sync over WiFi if you set the correct preferences. More on that in a minute.

  • Open a new Finder window.
  • In the Finder window’s left sidebar, click your iPhone. If you don’t see it, expand the section installments.

If a window appears, click Trust.

  • The iPhone management screen appears in the Finder window. This screen allows you to control your iPhone’s sync and backup settings. Inside Backupsclick on Back up all your iPhone data to this Mac.

If you have an Apple Watch, make sure to check the box Encrypt local backup. This backs up your health and activity data. Without verification, this data could be lost.

  • Click on Copy now.

You can also backup your iPhone to your Mac via WiFi. To configure this option, follow steps 1 through 3 in the last section. On the iPhone management screen, check the box next to Show this iPhone when on WiFithen click Apply. From now on, you can sync your iPhone with your Mac when both devices are on the same WiFi network.

How to backup iPhone with iCloud

Another way to backup your iPhone without iTunes is to use iCloud. With iCloud, all your backups are wireless and can be done automatically when your iPhone is locked, connected to Wi-Fi, and plugged into a power source. Here’s how to set up your iPhone to back up to iCloud:

  • Make sure you are signed in to your iCloud account on your iPhone. You probably did this when setting up your iPhone, but it’s worth double checking.
  • Connect your iPhone to WiFi.
  • lean on settings.
  • At the top of the Settings screen, tap your name.
  • lean on iCloud.

  • lean on iCloud Backup.
  • move cursor iCloud Backup on/green.

Is over. Your iPhone is set to automatically back up your data to iCloud whenever it’s locked, connected to Wi-Fi, and plugged into power.

Do you want to make a backup immediately? lean on Copy now to run a manual iCloud backup. Don’t worry: it won’t interfere with automatic backups.

How to backup iPhone using third-party programs

Not interested in using Finder or iCloud for your iPhone backups without iTunes? There are third party programs you can use instead. These paid programs allow you to backup your iPhone to a Mac or PC. They also often add additional features that other backup options don’t have, such as the ability to recover deleted files or access hidden files. Remember, you don’t need it: Finder and iCloud Backup are good options (and they’re already included with your Mac).
