How to Change DPI Resolution – Complete Guide

The IPR is a fundamental factor when we talk about printing documents and photos. In fact, changing the print resolution or the DPI is very relevant to obtain better results. In any case, you should be aware of what IPR is and other basic principles that we will teach you below.

What is a DPI in image resolution?

IPR is a term used primarily in the world of professional printing. In fact, it is essential when you want to print a photograph on your mobile or computer, so photographers and design professionals are very aware of the DPI.

In any case, what is the IPR? The DPI gets its name from ‘Dots per Inch’ or ‘dots per inch’. So what is indicated, represents the number of dots that there are per inch (2.54cm): in the print. How can you imagine the higher the DPI, the higher the definition printing, so high values are recommended for good quality.

Difference between DPI and pixels

It is very important to know the distinction between Pixels and DPI, since they are not the same. As we mentioned before, the DPI refers to the amount of dots per inch, mainly used in printing. On the other hand, Pixels refer to the smallest unit of digital images.

On the physical plane, the DPI represents the definition of the prints, since the more dots there are in an inch, the more quality the image will have. Instead, pixels represent the smallest unit on monitors to represent a point (square). As with DPIs, the more pixels there are per inch, the higher the definition and resolution of the panel.

What you need to know about DPI and prints

Understanding the above points, the DPI is essential when printing. Professional printers are capable of reproducing high DPI images. In any case, you should keep in mind that setting a high DPI will make the printing time longer.

In the same way, to edit photos or print them it is convenient to know the resolution and pixels of your PC screen, in this way you will know the basis of your equipment and what you can expect when printing the photograph. At the same time, remember that if you want clear images it is necessary have a good printer and quality paper.

How to know how many DPI an image has

In the case of digital images, we must focus on the DPI, which refers to the pixels per inch. In the case of WindowsJust right click on the image and select ‘Properties’, go to the ‘Details’ section and look for the ‘Horizontal resolution / vertical resolution’ section, here the DPI of the image will be displayed, which is the same than the DPI at the time of printing.

Ways to change the DPI of a photo

Before starting, keep in mind that changing the size or resolution from your mobile or computer, may deteriorate quality. In fact, it is something that is not recommended, unless you want to save some space. In any case, changing the DPI of the photo is very useful if you want to print it with the best possible quality.

Usa Photoshop

  • Open the Photoshop program.
  • Find the ‘Image’ section at the top of the screen.
  • There, select ‘Image size’.
  • You must disable the option ‘Resample the image’, so that the definition is not affected when printing.
  • Now, make sure to set the values in pixels / in and select the value that suits you best. Remember that the higher the number, the greater the definition of the image, but the size of the image will be smaller.

Use GIMP

  • Open Gimp and go to ‘Image’.
  • Select ‘Print size’.
  • It is important that pixels / in is selected.
  • Set the DPI value you need and save the changes. As with Photoshop, the higher the DPI, the higher the definition, but the smaller the image.
