How to fix thermal throttling issue in games on Windows PC

Just like any normal motor or power converter, your computer also generates heat. This heat emission shoots up every time your PC has to scale heavy operations. However, CPU and GPU manufacturers have designed their products in such a way that whenever they exceed the maximum safe temperature limit, the processing power output is decreased to cool down and prevent essential components from melting. This is known as thermal throttling. While running an intense gaming session, you will notice that the frame rate drops after a few hours. This is due to the thermal throttling effect. But if this thermal throttling issue is ruining your gaming experiences, don’t worry. There are ways to decrease this thermal throttling in your system.

WARNING

Thermal throttling is a feature, not a bug. Protects critical components of your system. Therefore, do not try to control thermals using third-party applications. Stick to the letters of this article and proceed with caution.

Solution 1 – Use a Registry Editor tweak

1. Just press the button Tecla de Windows+S keys together and type”regeditar” in the search box.

2. Then click “registry editor» To open it.

The Registry Editor will open.

Warning – Sometimes these registry edits can crash your entire system. In that case, a simple registry backup can save your system. Therefore, follow this simple step to create a backup of the registry before making any changes to the registry.

1. After opening the Registry Editor, tap «Proceedings“.

2. Then tap on “To export” to create a new registry backup on your system.

If you find any errors, you can easily merge this backup.

3. Once the Registry Editor appears on the screen, expand the left pane like this:

ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPower

4. Now, on the left panel, right-click «Energy” folder and touch “New” and “Wrench” to create a new password.

5. After that name this key as «PowerThrottling“.

6. Simply select the “PowerThrottling” wrench.

7. Go to the panel on the right. Here, right-click on the space and tap «New” and “Valor DWORD (32 bits)“.

8. Name this value as “PowerThrottlingOff “.

9. After that, just double touch on it to change the value.

10. Simply set the value to “1“.

11. Then simply click on “OK” and ready.

Close Registry Editor. Then, restart the system to allow this change to take effect.

Solution 2: Use ThrottleStop

ThrottleStop is a nice tool that you can use to stop this throttling behavior.

1. You can download ThrottleStop from here.

A zip file will be downloaded.

2. In addition, extract the zip file to a location of your choosing.

3. Then, double click about him “throttle stop” application to run it.

4. You will receive a warning message. Faucet “OK” to proceed.

5. Tap “FIVR“.

6. Now, choose the “CPU core“.

7. So, control the “unlock adjustable voltage” cash register.

8. Then change the button “Offset voltages” for “-102.5“.

9. You have to do it for CPU Cache and Intel GPU as well.

10. Then, choose the “hidden from CPU“.

11. Again, tick the “unlock adjustable voltage» option.

12. Later, set the “Offset voltages” for “-102.5“.

13. Next, in the FIVR Control section, select the option “GPU Intel“.

14 Control the “unlock adjustable voltage“.

15. In the next step, set the offset voltage back to “-102.5“.

16. In the side corner, in the ‘Save voltage changes to ThrottleStop.INI’ section, check the box ‘OK – Save voltages immediately“.

17. Then touch “Apply” and “OK“.

The changes should now be applied to the CPU and GPU cores immediately. You can try playing the game again and test if you are experiencing any thermal throttling or not.

If so, you can reboot the system just once and this should solve the problem.

Solution 3 – Disable Turbo

If the undervolt trick doesn’t work, you can disable turbo mode in ThrottleStop.

1. Launch ThrottleStop.

2. Then just control the “Disable Turbo” to keep CPU temperatures under control.

3. Finally, touch “To save“.

Close the ThrottleStop app and restart the system. After that, he tries to play again and test.

Solution 4 – Opt for High Performance mode

Sometimes if your system is running in power saving mode, you may feel this power throttling issue.

1. At first, press the button Tecla de Windows+R keys together.

2. Then, writes and click “OK“.

powercfg.cpl

3. When the Control Panel opens, click «Show additional plans“.

4. After that, opt for the “High performance” way.

[

NOTE – There is an additional option where you can use the “Ulitmate Performance” mode if you want. Want to enable this hidden power plan on your system, follow the steps mentioned in our guide.

]

Once you are done, try playing the game and check if this works.

Solution 5 – Set the minimum processor state to 100%

Setting the minimum processor state to 100% may work.

1. At first, right-click on the windows icon and touch «Run“.

2. Then, writes this line and press Get into.

 powercfg.cpl

3. Now check which power plan you are using.

4. Then touch “Change power settings” next to the plan you are currently using.

5. Then touch “Change advanced power settings“.

6. Now, simply select the “Processor Power Management» settings.

7. Here, click on the button “Minimum Processor State“.

8. Next, set the “Settings:” value to “100“.

[If you are using a laptop, you will notice two options. Just set “On battery:” and “Plugged in:” both settings to “100“.

9. Now, expand the “Maximum cooling policy” settings in the same section.

10. Set the ‘Setting(%)’ to “100“.

[If you are doing this on laptop, set both”On battery:” and “Plugged in:” both parameters to “100“.]

11. Once you are done, tap «Apply” and “OK” to apply and save this change.

Close Control Panel.

Then, restart the system and check if this works.

Additional Tips

1. The best way to get rid of thermal throttling problems is to work in a cool environment.

2. If you are using a laptop, you can use heating pads to get rid of unnecessary heat.

3. Also, desktop users should opt for optimal cooling solutions.
