How to Overclock AMD Radeon R9 270X Gaming: Benchmarks + fresh drivers + Windows (10,8, 7)

AMD has been producing high-quality video cards in the low-cost segment for many years. This article will focus on the AMD Radeon R9 270X graphics card from MSI. A series of gaming tests will be carried out, and the GeForce GTX 760 will act as an opposing card.

How to Overclock AMD Radeon R9 270X Gaming: Specification

The table shows the main characteristics of AMD Radeon R9 270X.

The frequency of the core and graphics memory is overclocked without any problems. The core of the video card is freely chasing up to 1080 GHz, and the memory frequency can be increased by 160 GHz. But in a further review, the tests will be provided without any overclocking.

Review of the Radeon R9 270X

The review will use an MSI video card, the delivery kit of which includes:

• software and drivers;
• adapter from Molex-connector to PSI Express;
• user manual;
• DVI-D adapter for connecting to a monitor.

The front of the graphics accelerator is painted in MSI’s characteristic black and red colors. The size of the video card itself is small – 271 mm long and 130 mm high. These parameters are suitable for most cases, whether it is Middle Tower or Big Tower.

The printed circuit board has a standard insulating coating of gray textolite. Also AMD Radeon R9 270X has 2 fans attached to the plastic shroud.

Under the fans is a bulky heatsink with four heat pipes. The radiator itself has a nickel coating, which extends its life. The side panel has the following connectors: HDMI, DVI-D, DVI-I, DisplayPort.
The GPU core can operate in three different modes at different frequencies:

1. The first mode is OS. The video card starts to work at the maximum frequencies available for it, and the cooler, accordingly, also increases the number of revolutions per minute. This mode is suitable for computer games or video rendering.
2. The second mode is Gaming. In this mode, the video card operates at an increased frequency of 1080 MHz, the cooler also increases the number of revolutions.
3. And the last mode is Silent. Most suitable for low-demanding tasks like watching videos. In this mode, the core clock speed is 1050 MHz.

You can select the desired mode in the MSI Gaming App utility, which is included with the video card.

How to overclock AMD Radeon R9 270X

“Overclocking AMD Radeon R9 270x Settings”: Overclocking the AMD Radeon R9 270X graphics card is a very responsible process.

You should not take on memory or core overclocking if knowledge in this area is at a low level. It is better to seek help from a specialist than to overload and burn the video card.

But if the decision has already been made, in order to overclock, you will need to first install several programs, namely:

1. MSI Afterburner – to increase the load on the GPU, memory, etc.
2. TechPowerUp GPU-Z – to display information about the video card.
3. FurMark – to stress test the graphics card and identify artifacts.
4. 3DMark is a common performance benchmark.

After installing all the necessary utilities, you can proceed to overclocking. In order not to get confused in the sequence of actions, you should pay attention to the step-by-step instructions for pre-configuration:

1. Launch MSI Afterburner and go to the program settings.
2. In the “User Interface” tab, select the desired language and design “Default MSI Afterburner skin -big edition”.
3. Next, go to the settings and select the “Monitoring” tab.
4. In the list, we move the following parameters to the top: GPU core frequency, GPU1 memory, frame rate and GPU1 temperature.
5. We put a checkmark in front of each selected parameter and display it in the overlay screen display (there is an option below).
6. Again we go into the settings and check the box for “Unlock voltage control” and for “Unlock voltage monitoring”.
7. We launch the FurMark utility, in which we set the maximum anti-aliasing and screen resolution.

After preliminary operations, you can start overclocking the video card. First, increase the frequency of the video memory. Initially, you can increase the Memory Clock by 200 MHz, then increase by 50 MHz each time.

After each frequency increase, we run the video card through FurMark. If the stress test in the benchmark was successful, save the profile in MSI Afterburner.

We repeat the cycle until the first artifacts appear. Artifacts can be different: from the usual change in the color of the picture to a complete freeze of the computer.

In the latter case, you should immediately restart the PC, and then return the original settings of the calibrated parameter. At the end, we check for defects in the 3DMark program, and then fix the profile.

The kernel is overclocked in the same way. We increase the core frequency by 10 MHz and look at the result. When overclocking the core, we run the video card in the tests that were carried out when overclocking the memory. If any artifacts appear, then you can increase the voltage on the core, but you need to be careful not to overload the video card.

Test results in games

Used test bench configuration:

• Processor – Intel Core i7, 4.5 GHz;
• RAM – 8 GB DDR3;
• SSD – 140 GB;
• Operating system – Windows 10, 64 bit;
• PSU – 650 W.

At some points, the main load goes to the processor, so it is worth considering the installed Intel Core i7. With a different configuration, the performance of the video card may differ from the performance in this review.

Crysis 3

All settings are set to maximum values, and the screen resolution is 1920×1080 pixels. Antialiasing – MSAA Medium (4x). With these settings, the video card produces 25-30 FPS. In some highly loaded locations, the FPS dropped to 19. It is worth considering the “high” level of optimization of this game. The MSI GTX 760 delivered 5 FPS more.

Battlefield 4

Here the figures are slightly better. On average, the R9 270X produced 40-45 FPS. The minimum FPS reached 36 frames. The GTX 760 has slightly higher frames per second – 40-48 FPS. All graphics settings were set to maximum.

Far Cry 4

The settings are set to ultra. Here you need to take into account the surprisingly good optimization from Ubisoft. The game showed 30-40 FPS. On the GTX 760, the situation is better – 40-45 FPS. The minimum FPS value for both video cards is at least 28 frames per second.

Tests in games AMD Radeon R9 270X showed good results, especially considering the cost of the video card. True, in most cases, the GTX 760 was ahead of the competitor by 10-15 FPS. Nevertheless, the R9 270X is quite in line with the price / quality ratio.

Download drivers – AMD Radeon R9 270X

The driver for the Radeon r9 270X, like for any other video card, is installed without much difficulty. There are a lot of options: from installation through auto-search for drivers in Windows to automatic installation using driver packs.

The recommended option is to install the drivers manually. Here is a step-by-step instruction of the proposed method:

1. We go to the official website of AMD.
2. We find the necessary video card and download the latest driver version.
3. Delete the old driver.
4. Run and install the downloaded file.
5. After installation, restart the computer.
