Intel buys a company made up of former Qualcomm and AMD to improve its GPUs

Intel acquired Siru Innovationsa company Finnish founded in 2010 which develops hardware and software technologies for the graphics sector. Made up of former engineers from Qualcomm and AMD, the new company becomes part of Intel’s Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics Group (AXG), as announced on LinkedIn by Balaji Kanigicherla, a leading figure in the division.

Siru’s men will support Intel “in pursuing leadership on the graphics front” thanks to skills that space between architecture, software, modeling and hardware implementation. Not only that, the executive also talks about blockchain and metaverse, a sign that the contribution will be decidedly vast.

As known, Intel has decided to enter the world of dedicated GPUs and in recent weeks has unveiled the first products aimed at the mobile sector. Desktop and workstation solutions will follow, without forgetting the development of the Ponte Vecchio accelerator for the world of supercomputers.

On its website, Siru describes itself as a company with “a deep understanding of graphics”, from high-level APIs such as DirectX and OpenGL to graphics architectures to more specific features. “We have implemented, designed and tested major architectural innovations that are in commercial products for our customers’ GPUs,” he reads.

Among the founders of Siru Innovations we find Mika “Trug” Tuomi, a figure perhaps not entirely foreign to the GPU enthusiasts of the 90swhen with his brother Kaj he founded bitboysa company that became a lot of talk because it failed to market a new desktop GPU called Glaze3D which, on paper, looked good. Bitboys therefore focused on the mobile sector and was acquired in 2006 by ATI Technologies. The latter was then, as widely known, soon after incorporated into AMD and BitBoys became AMD Finland.

In 2009, AMD decided to get rid of its mobile division, including the Bitboys team, by selling everything to Qualcomm for $ 65 million. The new Qualcomm Finland made an important contribution to the development of Snapdragon’s Adreno mobile GPUs (Adreno, we remember, is the anagram of Radeon).
