It can be assumed that the maximum multiplier of the Intel Core i5-3470 does not exceed 32-36 points (which is quite obvious), but, in fact, this is not the case. This CPU functions without problems at 3800 MHz and even at 4000 MHz (after increasing the corresponding coefficient in the BIOS).
Should I switch from Ivy Bridge to Haswell (Socket 1150) right now? Not worth it.
Intel Core i5-3470 Processor: Overclocking
On top motherboards with the Intel Z77 chipset, which allow you to change the BCLK bus and the same multiplier, you can achieve quite good overclocking performance, but there is one “but”. At a frequency above 3600 MHz, not all cores will work. At 4 GHz start up just one flow.
Still, getting more physical cores to run at 4 GHz is possible. To do this, you will have to manually increase the value of the BCLK parameter to 105-108 MHz, fortunately, most motherboards allow this.

Intel Core i5-3470 Processor: Performance and test results
To study the overclocking potential of the Intel Core i5-3470, we used the ECS Z77H2-A2X (V1.0) motherboard, which did not allow enough to play with multiplier and bus BCLK. However, there was an automatic overclocking option in the BIOS settings.
After its activation, the maximum coefficient was indeed increased to 40 points (but only for one core). In practice, the CPU frequency did not rise above 3800 MHz (for example, in the S&M test). At the same time, the ECS Z77H2-A2X (V1.0) board added an additional 0.2 V to the nominal voltage.
Note that at 3800 MHz the Core i5-3470 passed the SuperPI 1M test in 9.376 s (like the non-overclocked Intel Core i7-3820), and in the WinRAR benchmark the final result grew to 4753 KB/s (compare the figure with the nominal value).
Conclusion
We recommend taking a closer look at the Intel Core i5-3470 to users who are in no hurry to get rid of the platform based on Socket LGA 1155. And also to those who do not have enough money to buy a Core i5-3570K with an unlocked multiplier.
