Intel enters the graphics card market and hires Raja Koduri

Earlier in the year, AMD’s graphics manager announced that he would take leave from the company after a demanding period with both Polaris and Vega. Despite Koduri saying that he intends to return to the company, he eventually chose to leave Radeon Technologies Group instead, something that was reported recently.

It was then said that the former graphics manager’s next stop would be Intel, something they themselves now confirm. Intel has hired Koduri as head of a newly started department at the company called Core and Visual Computing Group, where he will, among other things, work on developing both integrated and full-scale graphics circuits for graphics cards.

This means that Intel is once again entering the graphics card market, something they last did in 1998 with the launch of the AGP-based graphics card Intel 740. In addition, they also want to invest in the development of their integrated graphics circuits in processors and what is described as ” edge computing soultions “, where the latter is believed to be about Internet of Things devices.

According to Intel itself, they will invest in high-performance graphics cards, which are expected to be direct competitors to both AMD and Nvidia’s models. Intel and AMD also announced earlier this month that they have entered into a collaboration on the development of laptop processors, but whether Koduri will be involved in this work is still unknown.
