BAGHDAD, Sep 25 – PRIME. The Iraqi Oil Ministry announced the launch of a new oil refinery in Karbala with a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day in test mode.
“Petroleum Minister Ihsan Abd al-Jabbar announced on Sunday the start of work on pumping oil at the refinery in Karbala and its test operation,” the ministry’s press service said.
According to the statement, the launch of the refinery with a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day, together with partners from South Korea, will “soon meet part of the domestic demand for petroleum products and reduce imports.”
Earlier in July, the Ministry of Oil reported that the launch of a refinery in Karbala would reduce imports of petroleum products by 60%. Iraq — the second-largest OPEC+ producer after Saudi Arabia — plans to double its gasoline production, the minister said, allowing it to both meet domestic demand and stop importing the fuel by 2025.
