“Is what happened with Nord Stream beneficial to the United States? Of course,” Nebenzya said at a meeting of the UN Security Council.

He stressed that the termination of the pipeline is beneficial to American suppliers, and from a political point of view, the last thread that ensures the independence of the EU in the field of energy has been broken.

He added that the EU has repeatedly emphasized the importance of the project and supported it, Russia also would not harm the pipeline in which it invested money. “We consider actions to damage the gas pipeline as deliberate sabotage,” Nebenzia stressed.

He stated that what had happened could not have been organized by “simple terrorists.” “An attack that could hardly have happened without the involvement of the state or state-controlled entities,” Nebenzya said.

The permanent representative of the Russian Federation stressed that Russia would identify those responsible for the attack. According to him, those “who are behind this cannot claim the position of not a party to the armed conflict or a neutral status, which, however, the Western countries have long violated.”

Western countries perceive sabotage on the threads of the Nord Stream system as a kind of revenge for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, the permanent representative said.

“Before the speech of our American colleague, we, frankly, did not link what happened with Nord Stream to the situation around Ukraine. Now we see that our Western colleagues perceive this sabotage, no matter who committed it, as a kind of revenge for Russia’s actions on Ukraine,” Nebenzya said.

“Well, I think this statement narrows the circle of suspects and can greatly help us in the investigation,” he added.

Last Monday, terrorist attacks took place simultaneously on two Russian gas export pipelines to Europe. Germany, Denmark and Sweden do not rule out targeted sabotage. The Russian side officially requested information from Denmark about the emergency at Nord Stream as soon as the incident became known. The Danish authorities notified the Russian Federation about the explosions at the site of the gas leak. The Nord Stream operator Nord Stream AG reported that the state of emergency on gas pipelines was unprecedented and it was impossible to estimate the timing of repairs.

The work of Nord Stream has been suspended since the end of August due to problems with the repair of Siemens turbines caused by Western sanctions. However, the pipeline remained filled with gas. Nord Stream 2, completed in 2021 but never put into operation, has also already been filled with gas.
