Nuclear power plant shut down in Germany

MOSCOW, 20 Sep — PRIME. The Isar II nuclear power plant in Bavaria will have to be shut down for about one week to fix a leak in the power plant’s internal valve, without compromising safety, German news agency dpa said, citing data from the German Federal Environment Ministry.

It is specified that the nuclear power plant operator has already informed the Bavarian nuclear supervisory authority about the leak.

“In order for the Isar II nuclear power plant in Bavaria to operate until the end of the year, it will have to be shut down for about a week to fix the leak,” the agency said.

Citing a spokesman for the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV), it is noted that the energy company Preussen-Elektra informed the agency last week “of the leakage of an internal valve at the Isar II nuclear power plant during technical discussions.”

“Security was not compromised,” the ministry said in a statement. At the same time, it is specified that the reactor must be repaired in order to be available for operation even after the end of the year.

In this regard, the ministry will now study whether it is possible to continue to use the Isar II as a reserve for energy production in Germany until mid-April, as German Economics Minister Robert Habeck had previously planned.

The nuclear power plant operator clarified that no repairs would be required if the power plant ceases operation after December 31, 2022, in accordance with the 2011 German nuclear phase-out decision, the ministry added.
