Nvidia and SK Hynix enter into agreement for GDDR6 memory for next-generation Geforce

Two years ago, Nvidia launched the Geforce GTX 1080, which is still highly relevant in the company’s range of graphics cards. In the not too distant future, the graphics card giant is expected to launch the next generation, where the details are obscured to the extent that it is not yet known whether the architecture is already launched Volta found in record expensive Titan V or Ampere or Turing.

Now Reuters reports (via Expreview) that Nvidia has signed an agreement with SK Hynix for graphics memory of the type GDDR6, which is seen as a clear indication that the next generation Geforce graphics card is on the doorstep. The announcement caused the Korean memory manufacturer’s share to rise by 6 percent.

The fact that Nvidia has entered into an agreement with SK Hynix also provides a first relatively concrete insight into the specifications for the next generation. All GDDR6 memory capsules SK Hynix currently lists have a capacity of 8 Gb (1 GB). This means that a graphics circuit with a 256-bit memory bus gets a total of 8 GB of graphics memory, which is also the case with the now two-year-old Geforce GTX 1080 with the same bus width.

Another detail is that the memory capsules from SK Hynix are available in two different speeds – 12 and 14 Gbps. Combined with a 256-bit memory bus, this gives a theoretical bandwidth of 384 and 448 GB / s respectively, compared to 320 and 352 GB / s for Geforce GTX 1080 with 8 GB GDDR5X at 10 and 12 Gbps respectively.

According to previous information from Tom’s Hardware, Nvidia’s next generation of graphics card will be launched in July and will begin with a direct replacement for the long – lived GTX 1080, which is believed to be called either GTX 1180 or GTX 2080. Nvidias is expected to launch allow tailor-made models from partner manufacturers until late summer.
